For those of you who attended the "Tips and Tricks to Help You Double Your Festival Fundraising, Sponsorships and Volunteers" workshop our president, Terry Terry, presented this afternoon at Michigan Festivals and Events Association's 19th annual convention, we've gathered all the resources Terry shared during his talk for your use here.

Volunteer recruiting tips summary:

• Really plan out what you need in advance and what your volunteers will need to do their jobs well. Forms such as the volunteer calculator, task description, and training and tools description can help you with this. Also plan out ways to recognize volunteers so they feel appreciated & come back.
• Consider the WIIFM for them. Then ASK them to volunteer.
• Get lots of people involved in asking, not just one. Ask volunteers to recruit more volunteers.
• Volunteer scheduling/tracking tools (such as Volgistics and TRS) exist. Don’t be afraid to use them.
• Keep things positive (dialogue guidelines!) so they want to come back.

Sponsorship development tips summary:

• What do sponsors want? What's in it for them? A return on investment that aids their branding efforts—recognition that brings benefits to their advertising and marketing. Benefits to the community, in terms of the quality of the experience (not just the numbers attending). This quality is shown throughout your experience, including the branding consistency you show for your event (one example of such communications: the sponsor promotion video you viewed).
• Building relationships is key to building sponsorships—and they may take a long time to develop.
• Almost anything can be sponsored. You can have fundraising goals for every area of your event.
• Negotiating multi-year sponsorships takes about as long as one-year sponsorships, but creates longer-term benefits for your event.
• Make it official—get in writing what the sponsor is giving your event and what your event will provide in terms of benefits.
• Make sure to show your gratitude and share the ROI the sponsor got from the event.
